Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie are very well-known stars, though you may be unaware they're actually related. It's an understandable oversight, because, over the years, the father and daughter have been estranged for long periods of time.

After decades of interviews and, sometimes, hurtful comments, the father-daughter pair continues to speak on matters now. This gallery looks back at their complicated relationship with pictures from the 1970s through today.

Though Angelina Jolie's fame has eclipsed that of her parents, the A-list star is the daughter of famous actors and former couple Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. Voight, the Midnight Cowboy star and Oscar winner for Coming Home, had two children with Bertrand, his second wife.

In addition to Angelina Jolie Voight (b. 1975), Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand (pictured here in the 1960s) had son James Haven Voight (b. 1973). He's an actor and producer.

However, both children later dropped their father's surname after years of estrangement. In 2014, Jolie revealed that problems began when Jon left the family shortly after her birth. This was followed by his only occasional presence in their lives, mostly just in front of the cameras.

Voight and Bertrand finalized their divorce in 1980. He never remarried.

Jolie has been open about her early life struggles with substance abuse, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts. Voight later described his daughter as having "carried a lot of pain over the years."

Still, the father and daughter stepped out for public appearances in the 1990s, though they'd later reveal they were disconnected until the early 2000s.

For Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie, personal matters reached a complicated high in 2002. Initially, they reconnected in 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and began to speak kindly of one another in interviews.

Jolie had even suggested that Voight appear as her character's long-lost father in the movie. "If we weren't related, we'd be friends. I like who he is," Jolie told USA Today at the time. But their relationship would soon breakdown to new extremes in the press.

In 2002, Angelina Jolie divorced Billy Bob Thornton, after which her father publicly spoke out against her. After news of the divorce, Voight had sat down with Access Hollywood for an interview, in which he confirmed that he too was estranged from his daughter.

Voight added in the interview that Jolie had "serious mental problems." After this time, Jolie, her brother, and their mother cut off communication with Voight. Angelina and James legally dropped the surname Voight that year.

Jolie spoke on the break away from Voight in a 2004 interview with Premiere, saying: "My father and I don't speak. I don't hold any anger toward him. I don't believe that somebody's family becomes their blood. Because my son's adopted, and families are earned.

"When I had the final argument/disappointment with my father—we've had many off and on—I had thought we were breaking ground, and I realised we simply weren't."

The 2002 estrangement would last until the family sadly lost Marcheline Bertrand in 2007. After that time, Voight and Bertrand's two children reconciled with their father. Six and a half years had passed since they'd spoken and they went public with the reconnection in 2010.

More recently, Jolie has spoken on repairing her relationship with Voight — and her children have been an important factor in their unconventional bond. From her comments and inside reports, Voight has been a supportive grandfather to Jolie's kids, especially when she and Brad Pitt broke up their marriage.

Certain specifics on the fractures in Jolie and Voight's relationship remain behind closed doors. But speculation tends to focus on their divergent perspectives on politics and humanity. Where Jolie is a noted humanitarian and activist, Voight is known as an outspoken Republican and, currently, a faithful supporter of President Donald Trump.

Over the years, he's been accused of spreading conspiracy theories and has spoken against the "Hollywood left." But the father and daughter have been able to stay together nonetheless, focusing on family and art.
