The 64-year-old playwright was awarded the prize "for his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable," NPR reports. And few could argue with that, really. While Fosse is not well-known to the general public outside of Norway, he is internationally celebrated within the literary community.

He has often been referred to as "the most produced living playwright," as NPR reports. "His immense oeuvre, written in Norwegian Nynorsk and spanning a variety of genres consists of a wealth of plays, novels, poetry collections, essays, children's books and translations," the Nobel Prize committee said via an official statement.
