"Baby, It's Cold Outside" has been the topic of much debate since a Cleveland radio station banned the song last Christmas. The implications of the song date back many years (1944) and fans and music-listeners have been on board for updated lyrics to involve more consent and less "date-rapey" vibes. John Legend and Kelly Clarkson have responded to those requests and will be releasing a version of the song with updated lyrics.
John Legend updates his Christmas album
John Legend is on the recent cover of Vanity Fair with his wife Chrissy Teigen and their two children, Luna and Miles. In the story, Legend reveals his plans for the track as well as more Christmas songs he has been working on for this year to expand his 2018 album, A Legendary Christmas. Kelly Clarkson will be joining him on the duet and some of the revised lyrics have been revealed.
Revised lyrics for "Baby, It's Cold Outside"
Once the lyrics said, "Say, what's in this drink? [...] The answer is no" and now they will read, "What will my friends think? I think they should rejoice. If I have one more drink? It's your body, and your choice." The revised lyrics promote a more consent-worthy song compared to the 1944 version.
Legend's press release now calls the song, "a modern and irreverent narrative." The updated version of John's Christmas album, A Legendary Christmas: Deluxe Edition will be released on November 8th.
