Joseph Matthew Alwyn was born on February 21, 1991 in Royal Tunbridge Wells, United Kingdom. His father Richard is a documentary filmmaker, and he has two brothers, Thomas and Patrick. Alwyn graduated from the University of Bristol in 2012 and went on to attend The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where he received a BA in acting.
In 2016, Alwyn made his film debut in the drama Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, playing the lead role of "Billy".
