In an emotional Instagram post, Jane Fonda, the Hollywood icon, penned a touching tribute to Donald Sutherland, her co-star from the 1971 classic 'Klute' and former flame, following his death due to a "long illness" in Miami. The duo, who briefly dated during the filming of the crime drama, left an indelible mark on the silver screen and in each other's lives.
Jane's heartfelt message
"I am stunned to hear that Donald Sutherland has died. He was my fascinating co-star in Klute and we loved working together," Fonda, 86, captioned a black-and-white photo from set via Instagram.
"In this photo we are on the Klute set with director Alan Pakula. Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex man who shared quite a few adventures with me, such as the FTA Show, an anti-Vietnam war tour that performed for 60,000 active duty soldiers, sailors, and marines in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Japan in 1971," she continued.
"I am heartbroken."
Fonda reminisced about Sutherland, describing him as a "fascinating co-star" and highlighting their shared adventures, including the anti-Vietnam war FTA Show tour.
Their on-screen chemistry in 'Klute' not only earned Fonda her first Best Actress Oscar but also sparked a real-life romance. Sutherland, remembered for his versatile roles from 'Animal House' to the 'Hunger Games' franchise, was praised by Fonda for his brilliance and complexity.
Their relationship, although brief, was filled with passion and mutual admiration. Sutherland himself opened up about their romance in a 2018 interview, revealing how Fonda had made a "provocative suggestion" that led to their affair. Despite their split, the respect and affection between them endured through the years, with Fonda expressing her heartbreak over his passing.
Donald Sutherland, a Canadian actor whose career spanned over 60 years, left behind a legacy of more than 200 TV and film credits.
His son, Kiefer Sutherland, also an acclaimed actor, confirmed his father’s death, celebrating his life as “well lived.” Sutherland’s last public appearance was at the 26th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards via Zoom, showcasing his dedication to his craft until the end.
