Tupac suffered from alopecia according to Jada Pinkett Smith
Jada Pinkett Smith (52) often speaks candidly about her struggles with alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes uncontrollable hair loss. Now, she reveals to 'People' that Tupac Shakur also dealt with the illness and kept it a secret from most.
"I don't think Tupac ever talked about the alopecia he suffered from," the actress and host unveils. According to Jada, the condition started for Tupac after he was arrested for jaywalking in California in 1991.
“After he was in Northern California with the police officers that beat him up, he started losing his hair," Jada explains. "And his alopecia patterns were far more extreme than mine".
She goes on to say that the late rapper would likely talk about his struggles with alopecia if he were alive today, but he kept it a secret at the time due to stigma and social pressure.
“I don't think Pac ever talked about his alopecia, but he also looked really good with a bald head,” Jada Pinkett Smith says. “But that was during a time and during an era that you wouldn't — he just wouldn't talk about it".

The actress is vocal about her life with the disease in hopes that more awareness will lessen the stigma around it.
"I'm glad that I've had the opportunity and we'll continue to have the opportunity to talk about how alopecia affects me,” Jada says. “And I'm just hoping that it'll give people the freedom to talk about how and just not have shame around it and not to have such a stigma. And there's a lot of shame around alopecia".
