Despite her immeasurable success with her writing, the author has come under fire in her personal life in recent years for her views on transgender issues, and how they translate into our society. Rowling has said in the past that she does not believe gender to be a fluid concept, and publicly opposed changing legislation that would compel speech when it comes to addressing someone by their chosen pronouns.
This has caused her to effectively be shut out of the Hollywood sphere, with many labelling her as transphobic and dangerous! Things perhaps took their ugliest turn yet when three activists stood outside her Scotland home in protest, and tweeted her address out into the world last week.
Rowling was quick to respond on Twitter:
J.K. Rowling Speaks On Harassment
Trans activists Holly Star, Richard Energy and Georgia Frost posted the infamous photo of them standing outside her house with posters that read “Trans rights are human rights”, “Don’t be a cissy” and “Trans liberation now.” They went onto share her address publicly.
As a result Rowling and her family have been receiving death threats. So many, in fact, that Rowling claims she could "paper the house with them". Ultimately the picture was taken off social media, confirmed by one of the activists, Holly Star:
“Yesterday we posted a picture we took at JK Rowling’s house. While we stand by the photo, since posting it we have received an overwhelming amount of serious and threatening transphobic messages so we have decided to take the photo down,” she posted.
Rowling went on to thank Scottish police for their intervention, and fans have been quick to rally around her. But she still has her detractors, and surely this story won't end here!
