Iman is opening up like never before about her sweet marriage to the icon and rock'n'roll hall of fame star, David Bowie. It's been 5 years since the world lost Bowie to cancer, but Iman finds ways to keep his memory alive.

The couple married in Florence in 1992, and share a daughter together. Now, the model is opening up about their almost 3-decade long marriage in an exclusive interview released by People.

David Bowie and Iman in a happily-ever-after

Iman says that for her, meeting David Bowie, whom she said is just David Jones to her, was obviously meant to be. "David said it was love at first sight," she said to the publication.

She says that he wasn't a rockstar to her, but rather a sweet man whom she very quickly knew was the one. After marrying in 1992, the pair gave birth to their daughter, Alexandria, and lived in New York, where Iman says they could "hide in plain sight."

Iman revealed that the quarantine proved very hard for her, as she decided to spend some time out of the city, and went to their cottage home in upstate New York. There, Iman said grief was overwhelming at moments.

"I thought I had processed [the loss] but I had not," she said, noting that memories of him and his possessions overran the place. It was because of this Iman was inspired to create a new fragrance as a tribute to their everlasting love.

Iman also noted how the pair came to be in the first place, saying that moving to L.A. was not her first choice, but that she feels she was meant to be there so she'd eventually meet her beau. The model says he would flood her hotel room with gardenias, and would always pick her up at the airport.

Furthermore, the rock icon had a gentle and sweet side. "David was beyond handsome," she said, adding that he "oozed" charisma. Along with that, he was always a gentleman.

"Early on, we were walking down the street and my shoelace came undone and he got on his knees to tie it for me and I thought he's the one," she said.

David Bowie was ahead of his time

Iman also revealed that Bowie was someone who was very aware of other issues in the world, particularly racial inequities, which was something she greatly valued.

"There is a famous video of him on MTV asking why they're not hiring or showcasing Black musicians," she said. "He was very enlightened."

Additionally, Iman says that he made her feel safe. "I felt cherished. Cherished and safe."

Iman still feels madly in love with her husband, who she reassures people is still just that. "Someone a few years ago referred to David as my late husband and I said 'No, he's not my late husband. He's my husband.'"

She adds that she still feels married to him, and has no plans or wishes to ever remarry.

"I definitely feel his presence, especially when I look out over the glorious sunsets at our home because David loves sunsets," she said. "Through my memory, my love lives."

David Bowie passed away on January 10 of 2016 from liver cancer and left behind a wife and two children, Alexandria Jones, 21, and Duncan Jones, 50.
