Holly Madison says she was gaslighted
Being one of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner's live-in girlfriends, Holly Madison knows more than most when it comes to the truth behind the notorious Beverly Hills mansion, and she isn't afraid to share the truth.
"The reason I think the mansion was very cult-like, looking back on it, is because we were all kind of gaslit and expected to think of Hef as, like, this really good guy," she said in a sneak peek clip of the upcoming documentary Secrets of a Playboy.
She continued, "You started to feel like, 'Oh, he’s not what they say in the media — he’s just a nice man.'"
Continued in the clip, Madison shared that they had some rules that were "isolating," furthering the notion it felt like "a cult."
"You had a 9 o’clock curfew, you were encouraged to not have friends over. You weren’t really allowed to leave unless it was, like, a family holiday," she said.
The publication itself responded to these claims, reiterating that since Hefner's passing, the outlet isn't the same as it once was.
"Today’s Playboy is not Hugh Hefner’s Playboy," they said in a long statement with E! News. "We trust and validate these women and their stories and we strongly support those individuals who have come forward to share their experiences."
They also added that they as a company have worked towards employing women and including them more in creative directions, announcing a huge percentage of women employed, roughly over 80%.
"We will never be afraid to confront the parts of our legacy as a company that do not reflect our values today," they said. "We are committed to our ongoing evolution as a company and to driving positive change for our communities."
