- Gwyneth Paltrow makes an honest confession
- She drank too much during the California fires
- Alcohol and menopause: an unexpected connection
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken about her experiences during the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles in an interview with Dr. Mary Claire Haver. In the podcast 'The Goop Podcast', she revealed that she turned to alcohol more often during this difficult time.
The conversation was actually about Paltrow's menopause. She explained that her symptoms are normally well under control unless exceptional circumstances arise. For example, increased alcohol consumption.
Gwyneth Paltrow drank a lot of alcohol
While the fires hit the Pacific Palisades and Altadena regions in January, Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband Brad Falchuk were not directly affected, but many of their friends lost everything. During this phase of "deep grief" Paltrow has increasingly turned to alcohol: "I think I drank every night."
"Normally I don’t drink a lot at all but those two weeks I think I drank every night. And my symptoms were completely out of control, she explained her usual consumption. The new habit caused her menopausal symptoms to spiral out of control, which was a new realization for her about the link between alcohol and her symptoms.
Alcohol and menopause: an unexpected connection
Dr. Mary Claire Haver, who also spoke on the podcast, confirmed Paltrow's observations: "Lots of my patients say the same thing. They've spontaneously realised that they've cut back on alcohol or just quit altogether because it just hasn't been worth it." The effects of alcohol during the menopause should not be underestimated, as it remains in the body for longer and can exacerbate symptoms.
