Clooney will not only act but also debut as a playwright in the stage adaptation of his 2005 film, 'Good Night, and Good Luck,' a gripping narrative centered around journalist Edward R. Murrow's battle against Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-communist crusade.
This move marks a significant milestone in Clooney's illustrious career, promising to bring a fresh wave of excitement to Broadway.
The Big Broadway Debut
George Clooney, the silver-screen legend known for his roles in 'Ocean's Eleven' and 'Gravity,' is about to add another feather to his cap - Broadway actor and playwright.
In a thrilling revelation, Clooney announced his involvement in the stage adaptation of 'Good Night, and Good Luck,' set to premiere in the spring of 2025 at a yet-to-be-announced Shubert theater.
Clooney said in a statement, "I am honored, after all these years, to be coming back to the stage and especially to Broadway, the art form and the venue that every actor aspires to."
'Good Night, and Good Luck' will see Clooney portraying Edward R. Murrow, the fearless journalist who challenged the constraints of CBS executives to expose Senator McCarthy's oppressive anti-communist policies.
The play, co-written with Grant Heslov, aims to capture the essence of Murrow's moral clarity and the electrifying impact of live television broadcasts, a feat director David Cromer believes can only be truly experienced on stage.
The original film was nominated for six Oscars, including best film, director and actor.
The movies logline says, "When Senator Joseph McCarthy begins his foolhardy campaign to root out Communists in America, CBS News impresario Edward R. Murrow dedicates himself to exposing the atrocities being committed by McCarthy’s Senate ‘investigation.’ Murrow is supported by a news team that includes long-time friend and producer Fred Friendly ( Clooney)."
"The CBS team does its best to point out the senator’s lies and excesses, despite pressure from CBS’ corporate sponsors to desist."
A major step forward
Clooney's transition to Broadway is not a solo journey. Alongside him, Grant Heslov, his long-time collaborator, has co-written the play, ensuring the narrative's depth and authenticity.
The production will be under the skilled direction of Tony Award-winner David Cromer, known for 'The Band’s Visit,' promising a show of unparalleled quality. Moreover, the 2024-2025 season will also welcome Robert Downey Jr. to Broadway, setting the stage for a year of star-studded performances.
"Edward R. Murrow operated from a kind of moral clarity that feels vanishingly rare in today’s media landscape. There was an immediacy in those early live television broadcasts that today can only be effectively captured on stage, in front of a live audience," Cromer said in a statement.
