"I wish so bad I could have realized in the moment a way to protect Coco from things that I didn’t," she admitted. The actress discussed her own struggles with codependency and the difficulty of watching her daughter navigate challenging relationships.
Cox's honesty about wishing she had trusted her instincts more as a parent resonates with many. Despite the challenges, Cox also highlighted the positive aspects of her relationship with Coco.
Cox said she looks back at particular at times when she should have trusted her instinct to intervene.
"I wish so bad that I could have realized in the moment a way to protect Coco from things that I didn't because of my own issues, whether it was codependency or seeing her in relationships with people that I knew, this was not good," Cox said. "But I didn't want to step in, even though I knew something wasn't right, because she would get so mad at me ... you know, 'Let me deal with it mom. You don't understand.'"
Cox continued, "And I did understand, and I should have trusted myself and I should have stepped in."
She takes pride in her daughter's independence and sensible approach to life, especially in a world where celebrity children often crave luxury and status. "Thank God, Coco isn’t into really high-end clothes or designer anything," Cox shared, expressing relief and pride in Coco's grounded nature.
In 2022, Cox spoke about the importance of setting boundaries with Coco, emphasizing the balance between being a friend and a parent. "We fight. I've learned that boundaries are important and to keep them because I know it makes her feel safe," Cox revealed.
