Dwayne Johnson has enjoyed a highly successful career in the world of sports and entertainment.
Born on May 2, 1972, "The Rock" rose through the ranks of professional wrestling and established himself as a popular actor and surefire box office draw.
Here are five facts about his life and family history.
Dwayne Johnson's football career
Coming out of high school, Johnson was viewed as a promising football player. He received a full scholarship with the University of Miami, where the powerful 6-foot-5 athlete primarily played defensive tackle.
After graduating, Johnson went undrafted at the 1995 NFL Draft. Instead, he signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League, though he was cut two months into the season.
It was after his football career didn't pan out that Johnson elected to pursue professional wrestling.
Wrestling runs in the family of Dwayne Johnson
"The Rock" may be one of wrestling's all-time great figures, but he was far from the first in his family to enter the ring. Dwayne's father Rocky Johnson (who sadly passed away earlier in 2020) was a noted professional wrestler, who is credited with breaking the colour barrier in the WWF.
Rocky's father in-law (Dwayne's grandfather) was American Samoan wrestler Peter Maivia. What's more, the wrestling tradition has now continued into a fourth generation. Earlier in in 2020, Dwayne Johnson's daughter Simone signed a contract with the WWE.
