- How to avoid problems
Dressing up on Halloween is a nice part of the tradition surrounding the day of spookiness. However, not only can you put your foot in your mouth, but you can also face serious consequences. Here you can find out which disguises are taboo on Halloween - and why.
1. No blackface
Using the skin color or characteristics such as eye shape or nose of a population group as a costume is an absolute no-go. This includes black or yellowface as well as hairstyles that have a special meaning in African cultures.
2. Avoid cultural costumes
Gone are the days when Native Americans, Roma or Geishas had to serve as costume templates. After all, the clothing and accessories of different people have deep meanings and should not be used for Halloween.
3. Disabilities are not a disguise
It is also important not to turn other people's disabilities into your costume. Missing limbs, crutches or wheelchairs are not really necessary for a scary costume.
4. No real serial killers
Of course, it's tempting to dress up as really scary people for Halloween. However, the following applies: stay away from real serial killers or violent criminals. This is simply insensitive to the victims.
5. Be careful with dummy weapons
A toy weapon with a costume often looks pretty cool, but the dummy should also be recognizable as such. If the weapon looks too real, you risk not only scaring others but also a hefty fine.
6. Costumes while driving
Make sure you take off your costumes when driving if they hinder your driving. Drivers also need a clear view and freedom of movement on Halloween - and masks are also legally taboo behind the wheel.
What is allowed now?
Don't worry, despite these rules, there are still plenty of costumes open to you. For example, try a character from your favorite series, a mythical creature or a professional group such as the fire department.
