Charlize Theron found working with Tom Hardy to be extremely difficult because of his lack of respect! As People shares, a new book about the making of Mad Max: Fury Road has delved into the tension between the two actors, explaining why tensions were so high on set.
Theron reportedly "felt threatened" by Hardy
Theron starred as "Imperator Furiosa" opposite Hardy's "Max Rockatansky" in the 2015 film, which she has said "really changed the trajectory" for her. However, she took her job more seriously than her co-star. In Kyle Buchanan's Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, Theron mentioned she would consistently be on time to shoot her scenes while Hardy would arrive late. Unsurprisingly, this resulted in tension between them.
The film's editor J Houston Yang said Theron and Hardy "hated each other," to the point where they didn't want to be in contact if they weren't filming. Camera operator Mark Goellnicht also shared how Theron's reaction to Hardy being hours late for a morning shoot caused things to come to a head. He said she "just sat in the War Rig" until Hardy arrived on set, at which point Theron blasted him for being "disrespectful," even suggesting he be fined for wasting time.

Goellnicht called this the "turning point" of the situation, saying Hardy got "quite aggressive" and Theron "felt threatened" by him. Theron shared in the book that while she has "a very clear perspective" reflecting on things, at the time she "didn't feel safe" and wanted a female producer there to help diffuse things. Looking back, Hardy also admitted that Theron would have benefitted from him being "a better, perhaps more experienced partner" during the shoot.
