The Canadian has had an on again, off again relationship with music's biggest award ceremony: The Grammys. Last year, he called for the awards to be replaced with a new awards ceremony after several artists, including fellow Canadian, The Weeknd, were overlooked. He was very vocal about his desire for a new type of format in deciding the best music of each year.
"I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards - This is a great time for somebody to start something new that we can build up over time and pass on to the generations to come," said Drake at the time.
Drake Withdraws Grammy Nominations
Back in 2019, Drake had choice words for the awards as well, even though he was a winner that year:
"I want to take this opportunity while I'm up here to just talk to all the kids that are watching this, aspiring to do music," Drake said. "I want to let you know we're playing in an opinion-based sport not a factual-based sport."
And so, Drake's two nominations have been removed from the 2022 Grammy shortlist. This decision came directly from Drake and his managers, and the academy has decided to honor his request. Drake was one of five nominees for Best Rap Album, for Certified Lover Boy, and for Best Rap Performance, for "Way 2 Sexy."
But now his spots are vacant and it doesn't look like the academy will be filling them with other nominees. So far, an official reason hasn't been given by Drake or his handlers, but for many, this will be a political statement from him on the current state of the music industry, and perhaps other nominees will follow his lead as well.
