In a world full of diet tips and health advice, it can be hard to keep track. Dr. Jessica Kiss, known as Ask Dr Mom on TikTok, recently highlighted five foods she would never eat as a doctor. Her list offers surprising insights and warns of potential health risks.
Five foods a doctor would never eat
1) Reheated fried rice
Many people know the scenario: there is still some rice left so let's refrigerate and then reheat it the next day. But be careful! Dr. Kiss warns that bacteria develops when cooked rice "is left at room temperature for a while" and then not heated thoroughly enough in the microwave. These bacteria form spores that are difficult to eliminate. However, a rice cooker could be a safer method of reheating.
2) Picnic food
Food that is left outside for a long time at a picnic carries a high risk of foodborne illness. Dr. Kiss advises: "Eat right away or just eat later." This caution can help to avoid health problems.
3) Food in unnatural colors
Dr. Kiss avoids 99 percent of foods that are dyed in unnatural colors. Such dyes are "not good for your system" and could have long-term effects on health. "I avoid that like the plague" she says. This refers to colorful breakfast cereals, for example.
4) Food from dented cans
Dr. Kiss is skeptical about food from dented cans because it could pose a risk of botulism, a poisoning caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The disease causes breathing difficulties, muscle paralysis and can even lead to death.
5) Grapefruit
Last on Dr. Kiss' list is grapefruit. She explains: "I don't eat grapefruit because so many medications interact with grapefruit." The fruit can affect the way medicines are processed in the body, which can lead to potentially dangerous interactions.
