Demi Lovato has revealed to the world that they are non-binary! Lovato came out on Wednesday in a special video that promoted the release of their brand-new podcast, 4D With Demi Lovato, sharing what embracing their identity means to them.
Lovato has changed their pronouns to they/them
Lovato took to social media to share the trailer, addressing fans with a special message. "I want to take this moment to share something very personal with you," they began. "Over the past year and a half, I've been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I've had the revelation that I identify as non-binary."
The singer— who previously used the pronouns she/her— then went on to share that their pronouns are now they/them. As Lovato explained in the clip, "this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and am still discovering."
Lovato encourages fans to "keep living in your truths"
Lovato has already updated their pronouns on Instagram to reflect their non-binary identity. They also said that they "will also be accepting if people slip" and accidentally misgender them, acknowledging that it is "going to take a while" for many to adjust to the change since she is a public figure.
The star stated that they "don't claim to be an expert or a spokesperson," and explained why they've chosen to share that they identify as non-binary. "I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones," Lovato said on social media. "Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way."
Lovato has been openly outspoken about their queer identity in the past. Back in March, they told Glamour that they were "waiting until a specific timeline to come out to the world as what I am." Now it looks like that time has come for them, as Lovato has embraced being non-binary and is living more authentically than ever!
