Charlize Theron Says She Wants Her Adopted Daughters To "See Themselves" And "Feel They Belong"

During a recent podcast appearance, Charlize Theron shared why it's so important to her that the film industry becomes more inclusive! Find out what she said about it here!

Charlize Theron wants Hollywood to step up its game when it comes to representation for the sake of her daughters!

As People reports, Theron was a guest on Variety's The Big Ticket podcast, where she talked about Hollywood and its inclusiveness in regards to race and gender. And as Theron mentioned, the issue is especially close to her heart because she wants her daughters to "feel they belong."

Theron talks representation: "I'm a mom to two small Black girls"

Theron shared on the podcast how she wants her adopted daughters— 8-year-old Jackson and 4-year-old August— to be able to "see themselves" represented in the world.

"I’m a mom to two small Black girls and I want them to grow up in a world where they see themselves, where there is an awareness that they can be whomever they want to be because they see it," she explained.

"And that’s not just in cinema, that’s in life, too. I want to surround them in a world where they feel they belong and they can shine and they can live to their full potential."

Theron on advocating for inclusion: "we have to use our voices"

Theron went on to share how she thinks people should address the lack of inclusivity within Hollywood. And as People mentions, she feels it's important to be more vocal in situations where inclusive decisions aren't being made!

"I think call them out, and I think we’re at a place now where we feel brave enough to do that … If we have to involve some shaming, then that’s what we have to do," Theron said. "If we are silent, even if we’re not the ones not making the right decisions, and we are silent, we are just as culpable, and we have to use our voices."

"And if we know of situations where we know people are not fully doing the potential that they have to reimagine this world that we’re talking about," she continued, "and they’re not actively and proactively doing that, then we have to call them out on it. That is our responsibility."

Theron says she wants to raise "two little warriors" for daughters

Theron also mentioned how she's addressed the Black Lives Matter movement with her daughters. And as People shares, the actress told Entertainment Tonight why she struggled with bringing up the topic of systemic racism.

"As a parent, it's been a difficult time," Theron explained to the outlet. "I think all parents, we want to believe we have time. And the world has kind of shaken me in a way that I realize that I don't have time."

"There was a moment where I felt like a little piece of my children's innocence was taken from them during this period because I had to sit down with them," she continued, "and have really, really hard, honest conversations about some really ugly things in our world today that they need to know. I want them to know because I want to raise two little warriors."
