Chappell's take
Saying her recent interview with 'The Guardian' was “completely taken out of context,” Chappell Roan released two statements explaining that she is voting for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election — but will not publicly endorse her.
In the first of two TikToks, which she shared Tuesday, Sept. 24, the rising star restated the original quote detailing her “issues” with the government, and apologized to those who "fell for the clickbait."
“I have encouraged people to use critical thinking skills, learn about what they’re voting for, learn about who they’re voting for, and ask questions, and it’s being completely taken out of context, per usual,” Roan, 26, began.@chappellroan ♬ original sound - chappell roan
“There is nuance to what I say in interviews, and I think it’s important that people use critical thinking,” she said. “I think it’s important for me to question authority and question world leaders, and question myself, question my algorithm, question if some person that tweeted something about someone else is even true.”
It is important to question these things, she said, “because that’s how I think we move forward.” “This is my third election in voting, and the world is changing so rapidly, and I want to be part of the generation that changes things for good,” the "Casual" artist said. “Because we need it.”
She is becoming quite a voice for her generation.
“I have so many issues with our government in every way,” she told the outlet. “There are so many things that I would want to change. So I don’t feel pressured to endorse someone. There’s problems on both sides. I encourage people to use your critical thinking skills, use your vote — vote small, vote for what’s going on in your city.”
Despite her intention to vote for Harris, Roan has chosen not to officially endorse the Vice President. She explained that this decision is rooted in her desire to maintain independence and avoid being tied to any one political figure. Roan believes in encouraging her fans to actively participate in the political process while allowing them the freedom to form their own opinions.
“That’s why I can’t put my entire name and my entire project behind one,” she added. In the follow-up, the “Good Luck, Babe!” performer also said that, at least in the 2024 presidential election, she is “going to settle for the options that are in front of me — and you’re not going to make me feel bad for that.”
“So yeah, I’m voting for f---ing Kamala, but I’m not settling for what has been offered because that’s questionable," she said, and later wrapped the video by encouraging her fans to do the same. “Vote for who, in your mind, is the best option for what we have right now, because it’s all we can do," she said.

By focusing on broader issues rather than specific endorsements, Roan aims to inspire her audience to engage thoughtfully with politics. Her approach emphasizes the importance of personal agency in voting, reflecting her commitment to fostering a more inclusive and informed dialogue around political participation.
