Cate Blanchett talks feminism
Cate Blanchett is no stranger to portraying diverse and often times dramatic roles. The two-time Oscar-winning actress opened up about her new series Mrs. America, and her portrayal of "Phyllis Schlafly", a conservative activist against the Equal Rights Amendment.
The series on Hulu will dive into the proposed United States Constitution that would have guaranteed equal legal rights for all American citizens regardless of their sex.
Schlafly’s efforts are opposed in the series by feminist supporters Gloria Steinem (Rose Bryne), Betty Friedan (Tracey Ullman), and Shirley Chisholm (Uzo Aduba).

Blanchett divulges how she managed to get into character, despite the fact that her character has completely opposing political views.
"In the end, no matter whether the character only exists in a script form or they’re a real person, I think you have to look at what they do,” she says.
"She did a lot of contradictory things. She said a lot of contradictory things. So you allow those contradictions to exist, smash them together and thrust it out to an audience," she continued.
Blanchett continues, "My function was not to judge her. It was to place her as well roundly as I could, so that she could be a foil for the other people and that you get a sense of the complexity of what it is to be a female in the 1970s or in 2020.”
Blanchett also goes on to announce how deep her feminist roots go, often times ostracized for her beliefs as a young woman. Today, the actress is proud to see how far the movement has come.

“Women are actually sharing their f— ups and failures and fears, and actually kind of moving forward together and really relishing what we’re really good at,” she says.
“I do think that the women are really making the elbow room, not only for themselves, but for each other,” Blanchett says.
“I think it’s really important to go back and witness how that happened within a system and what the system was like and how we can all together change the system to make it better for everybody,” she adds.
While they may fall on opposite ends of the spectrum, Blanchett notes that Schlafly was "extremely hard working", and "studious".
Mrs. American is streaming on Hulu, a new episode every Wednesday.
