It may be 7 years since Caitlyn Jenner went through her transition amid the very public divorce with momager Kris Jenner, but the reality star and ex-Olympic athlete is getting candid around her identity and split.

Sitting down with Rob Lowe, Caitlyn revealed her past experiences and what lead to her final decision to make the changes needed to live her best life!

Caitlyn opens up about her gender identity

Caitlyn Jenner is opening up about her gender identity, and the rocky road to finding happiness. Appearing on Rob Lowe's podcast Literally! With Rob Lowe, Caitlyn discussed her very real and very emotional past surrounding her identity.

Splitting from Kris Jenner in 2013, the former Olympian finally made her full transition in 2015 and has been exponentially happier since.

"I was never comfortable with my identity, even as a very young kid," she started.

"I was fascinated by my sister's clothes," she continued. "Never comfortable in my own shoes, fascinated with all that kind of stuff. But, you keep your mouth shut, you know? I'm talking the '50s and '60s."

Caitlyn added, "[Transgender] wasn't even a word back then. So I found ways to just distract myself from those feelings. Sports — what a great way to do that. Prove your manhood. But those feelings ... it was always there."

Caitlyn said that those distractions continued on for most of her life, adding, "My distraction was going to work, and then eventually it became family, it became all these things."

But she wanted to make it clear she adored being a father.

"And of course my kids yelled at me: 'Is that all we were? A distraction?' I go, 'No, no, no!' I loved being a dad," she said.

Caitlyn would have had to love being a dad, seeing as she has 6 biological children, Brandon Jenner, 39, Brody Jenner, 36, Cassandra Marino, 40, Burt Jenner, 41, and of course Kendall Jenner, 24 and Kylie Jenner, 23.

When she met Kris Jenner, Caitlyn also adopted on the Kardashians, Kourtney, 40, Kim, 39, Khloe, 36, and Rob Jr., 33.

Caitlyn talks raising kids and meeting Kris Jenner

Caitlyn opened up further about family life before her transition, saying, "I had 10 kids — raised six genetic, four step. Raised these amazing, amazing kids."

"It's what I've been able to accomplish and I'm very proud of that. I'm proud of all my kids. All 10 of them. They've all done amazing," she said.

When she finally met Kris Jenner, Caitlyn added that she was at a particularly low point in her life, saying, "I just couldn't go any further. And I thought to myself, 'You've got to get on with life. ... If I can't [transition] — because I can't do it, okay? — I've got to move on in life.'"

Once introduced to Kris through mutual friends, the two "hit it off right away."

"We were married five and a half months later. She had four kids, I had four kids, we tried our best to try to blend that family. Never an easy job," she said.

"But we kind of blended this family the best that we possibly could," she continued. "Kris kind of came in and took over. She was honestly a Beverly Hills housewife at the time, but she was always around very strong businesspeople and had great skills."

"She just started getting the ball rolling again because I had not for the last six years. The rest is kind of history," she continued.

Caitlyn reveals what made it all fall apart

Caitlyn then revealed that she had told Kris about her feelings on the inside and what she was going through, but never thought that it would lead to any tangible change.

"I told Kris my issues, but I never thought that at some point down the line, 25 years later, that I would ever transition," she said.

"It wasn't a possibility," she added. "I was in this, I was going to be committed to the family, but these are my issues, this is what I deal with. She was okay. And so we just went on with life and again, the distraction thing. Which my kids hate when I say that, but it's not them — a distraction from myself. And they were wonderful."

"Then we started doing the show, everybody's working, they were great years," she continued. "I didn't think it was at all possible at those times in my life... That went on for years and years and years."

Finally, after 23 years, Caitlyn and Kris called it quits.

"After 23 years, Kris and I went our separate directions. My identity, it was not a big part of us separating," she said. "There were so many other bigger issues out there. The only thing, I think, because of my frustration with myself, I might have been a little bit shorter with her near the end. But there was a lot of things going on."

Caitlyn then revealed it just became really calm and amicable. "You know it's not working, I know it's not working, you have this house, I'll go find another place.' And she even found the place. She decorated the place. She did everything in Malibu. She said, 'I want you to feel comfortable.' And that was it," she said.

Following the transition, Caitlyn wrote a book that the Kardashian-Jenner clan has always been honest that it caused a rift between the family.

But Kim Kardashian said during an appearance on the Alec Baldwin Show in 2018 that, "At the end of the day, we just want Caitlyn to be happy and be herself."

Since then, the family has been making amends, and are in a much better place than before.
