Brooke Shields has revealed shocking new details about her broken femur and what happened after the injury. Today, the 55-year-old spoke to People magazine about the accident, which occurred while she was at the gym back in January.
Brooke Shields: New details on broken femur accident
Shields said she had fallen off a balance board and the heavy landing broke her right femur. "It felt like it was all in slow motion. And then I just started screaming," she told People. "Sounds came out that I've never heard before," she added.
The Pretty Baby star revealed that she feared she "was paralyzed," but that thankfully didn't turn out to be the case. She underwent two surgeries and had a total of seven rods and one metal plate inserted in her leg, and she's now relearning how to walk.
Brooke Shields also suffered scary infection after injury
On top of the devastating leg injury, Shields revealed that she also developed a serious staph infection after being treated in hospital. Doctors feared it was a more grave condition, but, Shields said: "Thank God it wasn't. If it had been, my doctor said it would have been a race against time."
Since the injury, the 55-year-old first wanted to take on twice-a-day physical therapy, but she had to ease that plan for the sake of her wellbeing. She still can't stand on it or go up a step with the leg. Still, Shields says, "If anything, I'm a fighter."
The new interview came after Shields shared video in February of herself walking on crutches, initially revealing to fans that she'd broken her femur.
