In a heart-stopping turn of events that reads like a Hollywood script, Carrie Bernans, the daredevil actress and stuntwoman known for her electrifying roles in 'The Color Purple' and 'Black Panther,' became the real-life protagonist of a harrowing hit-and-run incident in the concrete jungle of New York City!
Carrie is receiving the best care
The chaos unfolded at the stroke of 1:30 a.m. on Monday when a rogue driver plowed into the peaceful outdoor dining area of Chirp restaurant in Manhattan. Bernans, a new mother, was among the victims left with critical injuries, her rep confirmed to 'People' magazine.
With several broken bones, but thankfully in stable condition, Carrie's fighting spirit shines as she battles through the aftermath in the hospital.
The drama escalated amid a police foot chase, with officers hot on the heels of a 44-year-old male driver after an alleged physical assault. The black Mercedes, the stage for this urban nightmare, became a weapon as the driver defied police orders and tore through the streets, ultimately mounting the sidewalk and striking Bernans along with other innocent pedestrians.
The aftermath was a scene of devastation. Eight individuals, including Bernans, were wounded in the rampage, while two officers also sustained injuries. The driver? Nabbed by the law and now in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital, per CBS News.
Patricia Lee, Bernans' mother, took to Instagram to share the grisly details of her daughter's injuries. The images—bloodied, bruised, and battered—speak volumes of the ordeal. Yet, amidst the pain, Lee's words resonate with hope and gratitude for her daughter's life spared by a whisker.
"She’s still in so much pain and can’t answer calls at this time…She’s in so much pain but healing. She was involved in a traumatic incident in NYC where a man, early 40s was trying to escape a hit and run and ran into multiple cars before hitting a food stand that her friend & her were walking near. It ended up knocking her unconscious and [pinned] her under the stand. She was under it unaware of what was happening," wrote Patricia Lee on Instagram.
But there was justice served. "Nine people were injured in his attempted escape from the hit & run, including 3 police officers. Police caught him shortly after and arrested him. Amidst the chaos of the New Year’s incident, she’s holding onto an immense sense of gratitude for life itself," she wrote.

Despite the injuries sustained in the collision caused by a hit-and-run in NYC, she’s filled with hope and faith in the unfolding of a beautiful new chapter. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she navigates this path toward recovery and new beginnings," the post read.
Lee thanked "all the first responders, police, strangers, my friend Katherine, family & friends who’s helped her."
As the investigation continues, the celebrity world and fans alike are rallying behind Bernans, sending waves of support and prayers for her swift recovery. This setback, as her mother poignantly puts it, is but a prelude to a "remarkable" new chapter being written by a higher power.
