On Nov. 17, Barack Obama will release his new memoir, A Promised Land. Ahead of the book release, the former U.S. president shared a sweet childhood memory with fans on Instagram.
In the picture, Barack as a small child is seated on the lap of his mother, Ann Dunham. The throwback shows them both flashing big smiles to the camera, while Obama describes what his mother taught him in the caption.
Barack Obama: His mother, Ann Dunham (†52)
Under the snapshot, Obama described his late mother: "My mother, Ann Dunham, was strong, smart, and marched to her own beat. [...] My mother believed that power came not from putting people down but rather through lifting them up.
"And she was always certain that in the face of injustice and humanity's more primal impulses, logic and progress would always prevail. 'The world is complicated, Bar,' she used to say. 'That's why it's interesting.'"
Ann Dunham was an anthropologist who specialized in economic anthropology and rural development in Indonesia. Barack Obama's mother created one of the first microfinance programs to tackle rural village poverty.
In Indonesia, where she spent part of her life, she also worked as a teacher. She died of cancer in 1995, just a few weeks shy of her 53rd birthday. Obama was in his 30s at the time of the loss.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama also likes to share on Instagram snapshots from her youth with her lovely family. Not only that, but since Joe Biden has been projected to win the 2020 U.S. presidential election, photos of the president-elect in his younger days have once again gone viral.
