- Ryan Coogler recently suspected of bank robbery
- The director is best known for Black Panther
- Coogler makes a statement after what happened
Ryan Coogler may be a well-respected filmmaker but he recently found himself mistaken for a criminal while he was at the bank! As Entertainment Tonight shares, a police report reveals that back in January, the Black Panther director was apprehended by police after an Atlanta bank teller mistakenly assumed his unusual note was a robbery attempt.
Coogler says accusation "never should have happened"
Coogler reportedly dressed in an unassuming manner while at the Bank of America, wearing a face mask with a hat and sunglasses. He is said to have slipped the teller a note stating his intent to withdraw $12,000, requesting to count the money elsewhere as he wanted "to be discreet." However, when the bank attempted to honour Coogler's request, the situation got out of hand.
After the attempted transaction reportedly prompted the teller to express her concern that Coogler was trying to rob them, the director ended up dealing with the police. He was quickly escorted off the premises and handcuffed by officers, taken into custody along with the two individuals waiting outside who had accompanied him. Fortunately, once he could legally prove who he was, he was released.

Coogler addressed the situation in a statement to Entertainment Tonight, asserting that it "never should have happened." However, he said that the bank involved "addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on," and the bank itself has also issued an apology. Coogler is currently filming the sequel to Black Panther which will sadly be without star Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in 2020 after battling cancer.
