Asante Duah Ma'at (professionally known as Blackk) was born on October 20th, 2001 in Maryland. He began acting while he was in elementary school, his first role being "Mowgli" in The Jungle Book. After many impressive theater roles, he secured an agent and knew acting is what he wanted to do.
Asante told Variety, "It was around then when I realized that acting was exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I felt a sense of community in the acting community, and I felt like I could freely be myself, and I loved being able to express myself in that art." He was quickly cast by Ava DuVernay for the powerful Netflix series When They See Us based on the real-life stories of the falsely accused and imprisoned children known as "the Central Park Five".
He portrayed 14-year old Kevin Richardson and performed so well that he earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination! Now he portrays a young student, "Malik" in the hit series This is Us. He has also earned a lot of well-deserved attention for his character and a Critics' Choice Award nomination for this role.
Asante said of his character, "what I'm trying to do is create someone who is completely the opposite of who I am. It is trying to find that balance of the maturity where he's able to be responsible for his daughter, but also that he's still a kid and wants to have fun and wants to have a life of his own." "Malik" is "Deja's" romantic interest and classmate who has a baby from his previous relationship.
Blackk is set to portray "Kareem" in the upcoming series The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Asante's work is truly impressive and we cannot wait to see what he is a part of next!
