Born and raised in Santa Barbara, California, Anthony Edwards grew up in a creative family and is of Irish decent. He went to college before pursuing acting roles, attending University of Southern California to study theatre. He left college at 19 after making enough money from smaller roles to support himself. His first roles included co-starring opposite Helen Hunt in the ABC sitcom It Takes Two (1982) as well as a cameo in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and the main role of "Gilbert Lowe" in Revenge of the Nerds (1984).
ER star Anthony Edwards has four children
After his roles in Top Gun alongside Tom Cruise and right before his career really took off with his role on ER (which ran on NBC for 15 years), he got married to Jeanine Lobell in 1994. The couple have one son and three daughters. Unfortunately, they got divorced in 2015.
Their son Bailey is the oldest, he was followed by his three sisters Esme, Wallis and Poppy. After the end of ER in 2009, Edwards moved his family from California to New York City and took a long hiatus from acting to spend time with his children and raise them away from fame.

In a 2018 interview with The Daily Beast, Edwards admitted that he "never felt any pressure about my career, and I’ve never met a man who said he wished he’d spent less time with his kids when they were little." He also revealed that his son Bailey will probably be the only one of his four children to take up the acting profession.
