He was accused of shooting his wife Maggie and son Paul on his hunting estate on June 7th, 2021. At the time, he had called the police and said he had only found the bodies. However, he himself was under suspicion, in part because his voice could be heard on a cellphone video his son recorded shortly before his death.

This exposed Murdaugh's lie regarding his presence at the crime scene. But that's not the only secret that came to light. Murdaugh stole millions of dollars from his clients, his law firm and the family of a former domestic worker.

He is said to have financed his opioid addiction among other things. According to the indictment, the murder of his family was intended to prevent these crimes from being exposed for the time being. Murdaugh also admitted to investigators that he hired the hitman himself.
