Quitting smoking has these side effects

We often don't even realize what amazing things our body is doing. After all, the first effects can be seen just 20 minutes after quitting smoking. This is when the pulse and blood pressure, which rise due to stress when smoking cigarettes, normalize. 

The carbon monoxide content in the blood also drops quite quickly and the oxygen content stabilizes. This only takes eight hours. Especially amazing: did you know that after 24 hours without cigarettes, you already have a lower risk of heart attack?

In the days and weeks that follow, the sense of taste and smell recovers, lung function improves and coughing fits decrease. However, there is also a rather nasty side effect of quitting smoking: the unloved cravings. 

It can happen that you put on a few extra pounds. This is also due to the fact that smoking burns more calories and sweets are often used as a substitute for cigarettes. However, this should not deter you from quitting smoking, because the positive after-effects do not stop.

Long-term health consequences

In the long term, the risk of serious illnesses such as cancer and cardiovascular disease decreases considerably. After just five years, cancer of the mouth and throat is only half as likely to occur as in smokers. After ten years, even the risk of lung cancer is only half as high.

Of course, there is another side effect that has nothing to do with the body: Your wallet is suddenly fuller again...
