Queen Silvia of Sweden has to cancel her participation in an exhibition opening for a very sad reason: the monarch is mourning the death of a family member.

On Friday, September 20, Queen Silvia of Sweden (80) and Queen Sonja of Norway (87) were due to open an exhibition together on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm. However, a bereavement intervened.

The event will take place without the presence of the Swedish monarch. The court confirms that Queen Silvia has had to cancel her attendance due to a death in the family: Charlotte Sommerlath, the wife of Silvia's brother Ralf Sommerlath, has passed away.

Margareta Thorgren, the Swedish court's head of information, explains to 'Svensk Damtidning': "The reason why the Queen unfortunately cannot be there is that the Queen's sister-in-law, the wife of her brother Ralf Sommerlath, has passed away. There will be a private funeral on Friday."

The Swedish court did not disclose any further details about Charlotte Sommerlath's death. Queen Silvia has been in Germany since September 15 - on that day she attended an award ceremony in Künzelsau, Baden-Württemberg. Official appointments in Berlin were planned for September 18 and 19.

However, she had no other commitments between these appointments, leading to speculation that she may have used this time to visit her family in Germany. Whether she actually had the chance to support her family during this difficult period remains unclear, as the Court has not officially confirmed this.

On Sunday, September 22, Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustaf will attend the high mass for the consecration of the bishop in Uppsala Cathedral.
