• Gascón deletes Twitter after threats
  • Apologizes for past controversial tweets
  • Faces backlash over comments on diversity

Karla Sofía Gascón, the acclaimed actress known for 'Emilia Pérez,' has made the decision to delete her Twitter account. This action follows a wave of harassment and death threats she received after her past tweets resurfaced. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Gascón expressed her frustration and concern for her family's safety, stating, "I’m sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect me and my family, so at their request I am closing my account on X."

Apology for past Tweets

The actress, who is the first openly transgender nominee for the Best Actress Academy Award, issued an apology for her previous tweets. She acknowledged the pain her words may have caused, stating she was "deeply sorry" for any hurt inflicted. Gascón admitted, "Perhaps my words are not correct, many times due to ignorance or pure mistake. I apologize again if anyone has ever felt offended or in the future. I am a human being who also made, makes and will make mistakes from which I will learn. I am not perfect."

Controversial remarks resurface

Gascón's apology follows the resurfacing of several controversial tweets, shared by journalist Sarah Hagi. These tweets, which have since been deleted, included remarks on Muslim culture, George Floyd, and diversity. In one instance, Variety reported Gascón's translated post reacting to the 2021 Academy Awards, where she criticized the event's focus on diversity. Such comments have drawn significant backlash, prompting her public apology and decision to step away from social media.
