- Brooke Shields' marriage to Andre Agassi
- Public feud with Tom Cruise
- She reflects on her life
Brooke Shields (59) has revealed intimate details about her life and relationships in her new memoir. In 'Brooke Shields Must Not Grow Old: Thoughts on Ageing as a Woman,' she opens up about her ex-husband Andre Agassi and more personal moments from her journey.
Marriage to Andre Agassi: Brooke Shields spills the beans
Brooke Shields describes her marriage to tennis star Andre Agassi, which began in 1997, as an escape from the control of her alcoholic mother, Teri. She writes: "My mom was a hugely controlling force in my life. When I married my first husband, Andre Agassi, I walked into another controlling, rigid relationship, and for a while I did whatever he said." The marriage ended after just two years.
Public feud with Tom Cruise
In another sensational section of the book, Brooke Shields recalls her public confrontation with Tom Cruise. After the birth of her daughter Rowan, Shields suffered from postpartum depression and took antidepressants. Cruise, an avowed Scientologist, sharply criticized her and described her behaviour as "irresponsible."
He recommended vitamins and exercise instead. Shields countered with the words: "An interesting opinion, coming from someone without ovaries."
Cruise later apologized to Shields, but not publicly. She writes: "It wasn’t the world’s best apology, but it’s what he was capable of, and I accepted it."
