The coronavirus pandemic has been one of the great equalizers in human history, where both rich and poor, famous and not so famous have been greatly impacted. Besides the obvious disruptions of any pandemic, this one has also created a new subculture between those who are vaccinated and those who are not. Many athletes have decided against vaccinations, and many others have strongly favored them.
Basketball legend Charles Barkley has used his platform to speak on athletes who refuse the shot. This came after NBA star Kyrie Irving publicly announced he will not be getting the vaccine.
Charles Barkley On Anti-Vax Athletes
During an episode of NBA on TNT, Barkley had a response to anyone who continues to claim that vaccination is simply a personal choice: “First of all, you don’t get the vaccine for yourself, you get it for other people.” Barkley went on to reveal he plans to fully protect himself and others: “I got vaccinated. I can’t wait to get the booster.”
Barkley continued by saying: “You don’t get vaccinated just for yourself. Like Adam said, you get vaccinated for your family first, you get vaccinated for your teammates second.”
The NBA is currently facing an internal scandal between vaccinated and unvaccinated players. Given the cultural impact of the NBA worldwide, it looks like this issue isn't going anywhere, anytime soon. Although the league is allegedly considering suspension for those who refuse the shot, and perhaps other sports will follow suit.
