- Five people charged over Liam Payne's death
- Find out what the charges are for
- Who is to blame for his tragic death?
The news of the death of former One Direction star Liam Payne shook the music world. In October, the 31-year-old singer fell to his death from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires. Five people have now been charged in connection with his death, according to the Argentinian public prosecutor's office. The charges range from involuntary manslaughter to supplying drugs.
Five people charged in Payne's death
The Argentinian authorities have brought charges against an American who identified himself as Payne's spokesman, the hotel manager, and the reception manager. They are accused of involuntary manslaughter, which could mean up to five years in prison if they are convicted.
A hotel employee and a local waiter were charged with supplying cocaine to Payne during his stay and face up to 15 years in prison. The identities of the defendants were not disclosed beyond their professional roles.
Drugs and alcohol led to confusion
According to Argentine prosecutors, Payne had alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his blood before his death. Judge Laura Bruniard found that Payne, in his state of intoxication, mistook the balcony for a possible exit, which led to his unfortunate fall.
Before his death, Liam was brought into the room by hotel staff. The hotel manager is accused of observing this and not intervening, even though the room with the balcony posed a risk to Payne.
Liam Payne had spoken openly about his problems with addiction and mental health. The remaining members of One Direction, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik, attended Payne's funeral in England alongside his family.
