The Bible is outdated and boring for today's times? In 2014, "Noah" was released as a blockbuster that not only impressed with its visual effects, but also with the engaging performance of its lead actor Russell Crowe. This film is about the well-known story of Noah and his ark.

This Bible adaptation is one of Hollywood's most successful films

Like "Noah," "Jesus Christ Superstar" is a product of its time. The influence of the hippie culture in the seventies cannot be denied. The musical tells the story of Jesus Christ being betrayed by Judas and gives it a modern touch.

Things are a good bit more real in "The Passion of the Christ." Mel Gibson's epic deals with the last 12 hours Jesus has to live and does not shy away from showing the cruelty and violence that come with the crucifixion. Those who can't stand the sight of blood should give this film a wide berth.

Director Martin Scorsese has also tried his hand at the Jesus story. The result is "The Last Temptation of Christ." The film is based on Nikos Kazantzakis novel "The Last Temptation" and shows a Jesus who doubts himself, played by Willem Dafoe. Scorsese takes many liberties and creates a fictional story that uses the life of Christ as a model.

Monty Python's "The Life of Brian" is also far removed from the original. With a good dose of satirical humor, the comedy also tells the story of Jesus Christ, or rather that of his neighbor "Brian". Although the film has many Christian critics, it is one of the cult classics of the comedy genre.

Jesus' life story is obviously very popular in Hollywood. I guess you could say it's "The Greatest Story Ever Told." That's also the name of the next Bible epic on our list. Peppered with the greatest actors of the sixties, such as Charlton Heston or John Wayne, "The Greatest Story Ever Told" is definitely one of the most epic Bible movies.

Charlton Heston must have had a soft spot for films of biblical origin. Besides his part in "The Greatest Story Ever Told," he starred in "Ben Hur." He played another leading role in "The Ten Commandments." In it, he portrays the biblical figure Moses. The scene in which he parts the water is still legendary today.
